Accessibility

We want to make travelling by bus easier for everyone. Here are some of the ways we can help.

Wheelchairs and scooters

Wheelchair users are very welcome on our buses. Some Class 2 scooters (up to 1000mm length and 600mm wide) can also be accepted onto our buses, but the ‘turning circle’ needs to be less than 1200mm.

If you’re not sure whether your scooter will fit, we can arrange a home visit from one of our accessibility officers to check.

UK regulations state that only one wheelchair or scooter can be carried in the designated accessible space, so if there is a wheelchair or scooter user already on board, we cannot take another.

Wheelchairs and scooters must be reversed up to the 'ironing board' style cushion and the brake applied before the bus can move off.

Our drivers will try their best to make sure wheelchair users get on board first so they can use the designated space. We welcome your co-operation in making the space available.

Many of the bus stops in the city have raised kerbs so wheelchair and scooter users can get on and off the bus easily. If there isn’t a raised kerb, our drivers can use a manual ramp to help with access.

Buggies and prams

Buggies come in all shapes and sizes making it difficult to say how many we can carry at one time.

We ask all our passengers to be considerate of others. If you have a large buggy, a smaller, lightweight buggy may be better to use on our buses as it will improve the travelling experience for everyone.

If a wheelchair user boards the bus, our drivers will ask for buggies to be folded away in order to make room.

Help-Me Cards

If you have trouble seeing our destination displays on buses, bus stops and shelters, our ‘Help-Me’ destination signs can be printed with your destination. Then, all you have to do is hold your card out and the driver of the right bus will stop for you.

We also have a pocket-sized version of these cards if you have trouble communicating with drivers. The cards carry a simple message or instruction which you can discreetly show to the driver such as 'Please wait until I’m seated', 'Please help me count my change' or 'Please face me, I lip read.'
