Our support of Age UK Continues into 2021
7 months ago
Plymouth Citybus are continuing to support Age UK Plymouth by donating a further 500 Citybus dayrider vouchers to support their invaluable volunteers with their travel.
Citybus will have provided a total of 1500 day rider vouchers to Age UK Plymouth as Citybus already provided 1000 vouchers at the beginning of 2020. The vouchers will enable their volunteers to travel to and from their destination, for free.
Age UK Plymouth’s aim is to enable older people in Plymouth to remain independent for as long as possible in their own homes and to enjoy a good quality of later life.
Age UK Plymouth have been working with older people in the city of Plymouth since 1942 providing a wide range of support and services from day care and dementia services to helping people in their own homes and providing social and creative activities. More than 47,600 people over the age of 65 live in the city and almost half of them live alone and many do not have any friends or family nearby.
At the beginning of the first lockdown over 1000 older people contacted the Charity needing help and support and the ongoing coronavirus situation continues to have a huge impact on older people’s health and wellbeing.
Despite currently only being able to have limited person to person contact with clients, Age UK Plymouth continues to support those experiencing loneliness by connecting them with others. Volunteers and staff are supporting those who are lonely or isolated through socially distanced visits and through a Phone Friends scheme where volunteers provide a regular phone call for a chat and to check on people’s welfare.
Online communications and activities are being developed to help lonely people connect digitally and the charity needs more volunteers to help with this and the Phone Friends scheme.
Much of the work done by Age UK Plymouth could not be done without the invaluable assistance provided by a growing number of volunteers who are prepared to give up some of their spare time to help.
Lynne Hodgson, Interim Deputy Chief Executive at Age UK said:
“Age UK Plymouth are extremely grateful to Plymouth Citybus for their generosity in providing free dayrider travel vouchers for the Charity’s volunteers. Many people have been kindly offering their time to help older people in our communities who are struggling with loneliness and feelings of isolation. As a charity, we rely heavily on volunteers to help us deliver vital services to thousands of older people across the city and this wonderful contribution from Citybus will make a real difference. Thank you so very much.”
Jess Bolt, Marketing Manager at Plymouth Citybus said:
‘We first supported Age UK last year by providing 1000 day rider vouchers for their volunteers to use. The vouchers have been invaluable and we are proud to be able to support Age UK further with an additional 500 vouchers, and look forward to working closely with Age UK in 2021."
