Plymouth Citybus and PL1 Events support National Grief Awareness Week

Plymouth Citybus Milehouse Road offices were lit yellow last week, to show the company’s support for the National Grief Awareness Week 2 – 8 December, which aims to get people talking to each other about the impacts of grief.

Typically seen as uncomfortable, conversations about grief and the feelings of the bereaved are often avoided and fall into the taboo category, making it difficult to provide or ask for help. 

Whether it’s work colleagues, friends or family members who have lost someone, there are support organisations across the country which can help them deal with the many issues which can crop up and the National Grief Awareness Week campaign is making aware of the breadth of support available.

The week culminated in buildings across the UK being lit up in yellow on Tuesday 8th December, but thanks to the generosity of local businessman Mark Buckingham, MD of PL1 Events, Plymouth Citybus offices, the headquarters of Go South West’s Plymouth and Go Cornwall Bus operations, have been bathed in yellow all week and provided an eye-catching sight on Milehouse Road.

Richard Stevens, Managing Director of Go South West, parent company of Plymouth Citybus, commented:

‘This is the first time we have participated in anything like this and this year, as we all struggle with the effects of the Covid pandemic, it seems the right time to be saying we must be more open about talking about the most difficult times in people’s lives.

In our small way, we want to acknowledge that there are many people in our company and in the communities we serve, who are feeling the pain of loss right now and that the way forward is to talk about it, try and learn from each other and hopefully be better equipped to support one another.

I am immensely grateful to Mark from PL1 Events for his generosity in installing the lights.  I know that our Communications Manager Lesley Shorrocks has worked extensively with Mark in the past, most notably on Music of the Night events.  Lesley’s own experience of dealing with losing her husband two years ago, is helping us as a company support an important campaign for us to get involved with.’
