Happy to Chat - 29 January 2019

On Tuesday 29 January we're launching our first 'Chatty Bus' in response to the Government's loneliness strategy. 

Research shows that three-in-10 Britons go at least one day a week without speaking to anyone close to them, we want to do something to encourage everyone to talk to anyone close to them.

On 29 January, between 10.30am and 2.30pm, our service 25 bus will have Citybus volunteers on board ready to start conversations with fellow passengers who would like to chat. 

We'll provide 'Happy to Chat' badges for those who want to signifiy that they would like to join in the conversation, and we won't disturb passengers who would prefer not to take part. 

We've also teamed up with Moments Cafe on New George Street, to provide a safe and comfortable enviornment for anyone who might want to carry on a conversation. Our 'Happy to Chat' volunteers will also be at the cafe from 10.30am until 2.30pm. 

Richard Stevens, managing director of Plymouth Citybus, said: "The bus is the original social network and this research shows just how vital a lifeline the bus can be for those who feel lonely or excluded. The launch of this campaign is the first step we're taking to encourage people to reach out to those around them. We hope that our volunteers on the day can help everyone feel happier as a result of being on the bus." 

Moments Cafe said: "We're so excited to be involved in such a fantastic campaign. Loneliness is a big issue in Plymouth, so we're happy to do anything we can to try and reduce that number. Moments Cafe offers a safe place to eat, meet and socialise, where all profits go back into the community, helping to support people living with Dementia. We're not your average cafe, we're a cafe with a social conscience." 

Luke Pollard, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, said: "Loneliness is a big problem. It's a big problem in Plymouth, it's a big problem throughout the country, and it's something that we can all do something about. It's so important that we all do something - even only the little things - that makes a difference."
