Brother on a Bus: A Very Special Passenger on our Patch

4 weeks ago Thu 12th Jun 2025

Here at Go South West, we’re proud to have welcomed a truly remarkable passenger aboard our Go Cornwall Bus and Plymouth Bus services- Brother John Green, an 85-year-old resident of the historic Hospital of St Cross in Winchester, currently undertaking an incredible bus-only journey around the British Isles.

Affectionately known as the “Brother on a Bus,” Brother John began his adventure on May 1st, 2025, armed with a senior bus pass, a suitcase, and a mission to raise awareness and funds for the Hospital of St Cross- Britain’s oldest almshouse, which will celebrate its 900th anniversary in 2032.

This week, Brother John journeyed through Cornwall with us, travelling via our services from Launceston to Camelford, then on to Wadebridge, Truro, Newquay, Padstow, and Bodmin Parkway. Each connection marked another step in his inspiring eight-week trip around the British Isles, showcasing not only his remarkable spirit but the reliability and reach of Britain’s bus network. He then caught the train to Plymouth, where he continued his journey through the UK.

Brother John isn’t just riding buses - he’s sharing stories, meeting fellow travellers, and bringing to life the heritage and humanity of public transport. His efforts have drawn national attention and high-level support, including good wishes from His Majesty The King, the Bishop of Winchester, and the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire.

You can follow his journey and reflections via his weekly blog at hospitalofstcross.co.uk/brother-on-a-bus and support his fundraising efforts at justgiving.com/campaign/brotheronabus.

It’s our honour to support him. Safe travels, Brother Green - Cornwall and Plymouth are cheering you on!
