Teacher's corner

Pupils and teachers from the Pilgrim School with the Plymouth City Transport Preservation group’s 1965 Leyland Atlantean.Pupils from the Pilgrim School in Plymouth enjoyed a visit to the Plymouth Citybus depot as part of the company’s Dennis Dart School Safety Bus Project. The children participated in the project which is based on a series of books by the company’s Marketing Manager Sylvia Bird.  Free copies of the character filled book were issued to pupils who participated in the presentation that covers how to safely travel by bus.

Not only did the visit to the depot offer the chance to meet some of the characters including Marvel the Milk Float and Shifty Syd, they were given a guided tour of the engineering facilities and met the teams who keep the fleet of 173 single and double deck buses and coaches safe to run on the bus network.

Sylvia says that by instructing children at an early age how to find out about bus services and safely travel and behave with consideration to other passengers, with or without a guardian, it is hoped to encourage more young people to travel by bus.

Schools can also request a visit by 'Dennis Dart' to their school.  Sylvia will come along with 'Dennis Dart' and give a short presentation on how to use a bus safely.  The children are invited on board the bus to observe the safety features and are given a short ride offering them the chance to 'ring the bell' and have some fun!

These safety projects are free to schools and give the children a chance to see how a bus company and its staff work as part of the community.

Pictured below are children from Riverside Primary School receiving a safety presentation.

Schools wishing to participate in the project can contact Sylvia Bird on 01752 264211
